Tips on Solving the Most Common Printer Problems

A Printer Repair Specialist Gives Helpful Advice

Are you tired of ink smudges and paper jams? Even if that’s so, don’t rush into purchasing a new printer. Sometimes performing a little routine maintenance and changing things up a little bit can resolve the issues and help you save money. Here’s a list of things that you can do before calling a printer repair professional.

  1. Check whether you are using the right size of paper for your printer in its manual. Also, make sure you haven’t overfilled the paper feeder, which will help you avoid paper jams and may stop a uneven or smudgy printer issue. Some printers can have a hard time printing on special kinds of paper, such as heavy cardstock and glossy sheets. For that reason, it’s better to use slightly smaller stack of lighweigh, clean, 8 by 10 inches copier/printer paper because it will work best, and you will avoid making a mess.

  2. Re-installing or updating your driver may help fix printing issues such as unreadable text and strange characters. Go to the website of your printer manufacturer and select the printer model and the computer operating system. Then follow the on-screen prompt to complete the installation. It’s a good idea to bookmark the website and check it on a regular basis, so you don’t miss any important updates.

  3. Clean the heads of your printer to avoid blurry images and text. You can access most of the printer maintenance options by choosing print from any program and clicking on the properties menu, which is located next to the name of the printer. Choose the maintenance tab and find the nozzles’ checking option. If the lines that print are broken or blurred, select the print head cleaner icon to clean away any dried ink, dust and dirt. Make sure to test and clean the printer’s head often to avoid build-up.

  4. Replace your toner or cartridges to fix “low ink level” alerts, and non-extentent/missing text or pictures. Each printer needs a specific toner or ink cartridge type, and you need to follow the directions from your printer’s manual. Those directions can also be found when you open the printer cover; in or on the toner or cartridge package; or onscreen when your computer is gives you alerts for low ink levels.
